Wessex GP Education Trust
The Wessex GP Educational Trust (WGPET) was formed in 1990 to provide funding for educational events run by GP Tutors in Wessex. It is funded by subscriptions paid by its members and receives no public money.
Membership entitles members to attend as many WGPET underwritten educational events as they want. Most events run by GP Tutors in Wessex fall in this category. Members are also able to attend Wessex Faculty RCGP courses at a subsidised rate and may claim re-imbursment for part of the educational costs when attending ‘out of area’ events, subject to certain limits. In addition to this WGPET provides financial support to practice based education (PEAS) and small GP educational groups.
For more details on the benefits of becoming a member and the subscription costs, please see WGPET Homepage, WGPET Forthcoming Events and WGPET Ongoing Activities or contact them via email

Practice Education and Leaders Programme
This facility exists for practices to develop educational programmes in house. Every WGPET member receives £75 per annum.
You need to register through your local post graduate tutor who will send you a form to complete. This lists the members participating and requests an outline of the planned educational activity. This would normally be 10-12 meetings per year.
A wide range of activity is acceptable from invited speakers to in house complaints, referral significant events analysis case discussions CPR training etc. The GP tutors would be happy to discuss topics or help provide facilitation .It is an easy way to earn back part of your WGPET subscription!
A practice that learns together stays together.

Newly Qualified GP Meetings
Since 2009 we have successfully run monthly educational meetings for newly qualified GPs in Dorset. Our aim has been to support newly qualified GPs with the transition from GP Trainee to independent GP; to encourage the concept of lifelong learning (and hopefully the formation of ‘young GP’ groups), to ensure GPs are preparing for Appraisal and Revalidation and to provide an opportunity to share experiences and issues of concern.
2011 NQGP educational meetings will be held on the second wednesday of the month at The Harbour Hospital in Poole. The first meeting will be on Wednesday 10th August. The informal evenings will start at 1900 with a meal. This will be followed at 1930 by a case based discussion on a clinical topic facilitated by a local consultant and an opportunity to address areas of relevance to appraisal eg Significant Event Analysis. The evening should finish at 2130.
If you are finishing your ST3 year and are interested in attending, please contact Aurelia Butcher for more information.

Sessional GP Meetings
All Sessional GPs are welcome to attend our monthly educational meetings held currently in the upstairs room at ”The Salterns Hotel’ in Lilliput from 1845 on the last Wednesday of the month. The meetings cover clinical and non clinical topics supported by local consultants and clinicians. They provide an opportunity to discuss cases, experiences and any issues. A light buffet is provided. If you would like to know more about these meetings please contact Dr Alex Jones (nee Davies).

Small Groups
The Dorset GP Education team is keen to support new and existing small GP groups. We encourage participants to also take advantage of the funding available for such meetings through WGPET.
If you would like support in setting up a new group, please contact your local GP Tutor. A NASGP guide is also available.
