Recruitment and retaining the workforce

Ongoing projects include:

  • Early promotion of General Practice as a career in school aged children
  • Postgraduate GP Scheme: Starting August 2016
  • Understanding GP trainees and First5 doctors  career aspirations and trajectories
  • New roles for GPs: ‘Extensivists’ managing vulnerable complex patients in primary and secondary care


Excellence and Innovation in Medical Education

The Dorset GP Centre has a track record of excellence and innovation in GP education. Ongoing and new projects include:

  • ‘Real-life’ simulation training for managing emergencies in the community
  • Using the Arts in medical education
  • Near peer teaching and mentoring
  • Developing doctors resilience, psychological flexibility and coping with uncertainty
  • Supporting female doctors on maternity leave


Health and wellbeing of the workforce

Understanding how to improve the Health and Wellbeing of the workforce is an important pillar of our research (see also 5 Year Forward View). Current research areas include assessing the value of:

  • Humanities based teaching
  • Mindfulness
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Leadership training
